Overview.
Gas Monitor Training meets the initial training and knowledge assessment requirements for personnel preparing to work as gas monitors.
The role covers safety watch duties through the ongoing monitoring of a hot work site, and standby duties for confined space operations. The training equips personnel with the relevant knowledge to carry out that role safely.
In the workplace, persons undertaking standby or safety watch duties at the entrance to a confined space are required to be an Authorised Gas Tester or a Gas Monitor.
Who it is for.
Personnel preparing to work as gas monitors, providing safety watch duties through the ongoing monitoring of a hot work site and standby duties for confined space operations.
There are no prerequisites for this product.
What the training covers.
The single mandatory unit, OIS-105 Gas Monitoring, covers providing safety watch duties:
- The definition of hot work, including any operation involving naked flames, producing heat or sparks, or with spark potential.
- Confined space criteria, including the definition in national regulations and approved codes of practice, and spaces not designed for continuous worker occupancy.
- The types of operation being tested for flammable and toxic gases.
- The responsibilities of the fire watch, the standby person and the gas monitor.
- The use and care of PPE for different toxic and flammable gases, determined through risk assessment.
- Working within the safe system of work.
- The hazards and properties of flammable and toxic gases, and the behaviour of different gases: heavier than air, lighter than air, and the neutral buoyancy effect.
- How a flammable gas or vapour cloud could arrive at the hot work site.
- The impact of environmental changes on working conditions.
- The importance of regular communication, and sources of assistance and specialist support.
- Completion of relevant documentation, and the importance of checking that equipment controls are as specified.
How it is assessed.
Learners are assessed against the outcomes specified, in accordance with the assessment guidance detailed in the unit.
Where a learner does not demonstrate an understanding of all outcomes, and time permits, instructors identify any gaps in the learner's knowledge and make reasonable effort to address them, through verbal questioning, further written test questions or another appropriate method. If a learner fails to meet the product after reasonable tuition, no certificate is issued and the learner is required to re-attend the programme at a later date.

OIS-105 Gas Monitoring, the unit that makes up Gas Monitor Training, is also a unit of Authorised Gas Tester Training. In the workplace, standby and safety watch duties at the entrance to a confined space are undertaken by an Authorised Gas Tester or a Gas Monitor. Your duty holder or employer determines which certificate your role requires.
