POSEIDON TRAINING COURSE

SUSTAINABILITY: THE ENERGY TRANSITION AND NET ZERO

A technically neutral, one-day foundation in where energy comes from and why the energy system is changing.

Poseidon Training course. It is not OPITO-approved and does not lead to an OPITO certificate.

01

Overview

The energy system is changing, and people across the industry are expected to understand why and how. This one-day course gives a sound, technically neutral foundation: where energy comes from, why the system is changing, what net zero means, how to read energy data, and the current and future uses of hydrogen, carbon capture, wind and solar power.

Thailand is used as the local context throughout, alongside the global picture.

02

Who it is for

Personnel working in, or moving into, the energy industry who need a foundation in sustainability and the energy transition, including oil and gas, power generation and renewables personnel. There are no entry requirements.

03

What the course covers

  1. 1.Energy supply and power generation: the main sources of energy supply (oil, natural gas, renewables, nuclear and coal), the main parts of the power generation sector, and the effect of energy supply on CO₂ emissions.
  2. 2.Why the energy system is changing: climate change and the rationale for net zero, the six major greenhouse gases, and the main sectors that emit CO₂.
  3. 3.Net zero: what net zero emissions means, the aims of the Paris Agreement and national commitments under the UN climate framework, and Thailand's plans and legislation for reaching net zero.
  4. 4.Energy trends and the generation mix: long-term trends in energy use and electricity generation, how to read charts, graphs and tables, why the mix changes, the need to decarbonise, and the challenges of renewables and nuclear.
  5. 5.Hydrogen: existing industrial uses and production methods, low-carbon and high-carbon hydrogen, conversion to ammonia, blending with natural gas, future uses, and Thailand's developing hydrogen economy.
  6. 6.Carbon capture, utilisation and storage: existing industrial uses of CCUS, its potential in refineries and chemical processing, future uses, and emerging CCUS infrastructure in Thailand.
  7. 7.Wind power: existing uses, its future role in the energy transition, the sectors affected, and emerging wind power infrastructure in Thailand.
  8. 8.Solar power: existing uses, its future role in the energy transition, the sectors affected, and emerging solar power infrastructure in Thailand.
04

How the course runs

Instructor-led, with presentation, data activities, discussion and questioning. There are no practical tasks. Four activities build understanding through the day: which sectors emit the most; reduction, removal or offset; reading energy data; and a technology comparison set against Thailand's transition.

05

Assessment and certification

Understanding is checked against all eight outcomes through questioning during the day, a data interpretation worksheet, and a 15-minute written knowledge assessment of 24 multiple-choice and 3 short-answer questions.

To complete the course, a learner needs at least 23 of 30 marks, including at least 2 of 3 multiple-choice marks in each outcome. Where an outcome is not yet evidenced, the instructor uses further oral questioning. Results are recorded for each outcome.

A Poseidon Training certificate is issued to learners who attend the full six hours and show understanding of all eight outcomes.
