Overview
A task risk assessment is only as good as the people who build it and the people who work under it. This four-hour course prepares anyone who takes part in task planning, contributes to assessments or works under them to break work into sensible steps, identify hazards and consequences, evaluate risk, choose strong controls, and recognise when an assessment must be stopped and reviewed.
The course includes a 45-minute practice exercise. Working in small groups on a fictional platform task, learners build a TRA/JSA on paper, then deal with a change part-way through. The exercise is for learning. It is not graded, and the practice matrix and form are training tools only; real work always uses your company's matrix and procedure.
Organisations use different names for similar tools: TRA, JSA, JHA, JRA, SJA. The course explains them, and your company's terminology always applies at work.
Who it is for
Operators, technicians, supervisors, team leaders, maintenance, drilling and construction personnel, permit users, contractors, HSE personnel and planners: anyone who contributes to risk assessments, works under JSAs or TRAs, leads toolbox talks or works within a permit-to-work system.
What the course covers
- 1.Risk assessment fundamentals: hazard, risk, consequence and likelihood, and what a TRA/JSA can and cannot do.
- 2.Task breakdown and hazard identification: breaking a task into useful steps and finding who or what could be harmed.
- 3.Risk evaluation: likelihood, consequence and risk matrices, risk before and after controls, ALARP awareness, and the limits of matrices.
- 4.Control measures: the hierarchy of controls, strong and weak controls, and controls that are specific, owned and verified.
- 5.The TRA/JSA process: generic and task-specific assessments, the link with permits and specialist controls, and common failures.
- 6.People and communication: roles, the toolbox talk or pre-job brief, Stop Work Authority and escalation.
- 7.Review, change and dynamic risk: keeping an assessment valid, what triggers review, and dynamic risk assessment.
- 8.Applying the process: the practice exercise, change event and debrief.
How the course runs
Instructor-led, with oil and gas examples, short activities, a comparison of a poor and a good JSA, and the practice exercise. For live online delivery, the exercise runs in breakout rooms.
The course ends with a 20-question interactive knowledge review. There is no pass mark and no score. The instructor uses the review to find and close any gaps in understanding before the course finishes. You complete the course by attending the full four hours, taking part in the review, and having your understanding of the safety principles confirmed by the instructor. If anything remains unclear, the instructor arranges further review. This is not a fail.

What this course does not qualify you to do
Awareness level only. This certificate does not make the holder an appointed Risk Assessor, Permit Issuer or Permit Holder, or authorise the holder to approve risk assessments, authorise work or carry out HAZID, HAZOP, QRA, SIL or LOPA studies.
Those functions need your organisation's procedures, competence and authorisation.
No. It prepares you to take an effective part in them. Approving assessments and authorising work are roles your organisation appoints under its own procedures.
No. It is a learning activity. The instructor debriefs the groups, and the exercise is not a competence assessment.
