DROPPED OBJECTS AWARENESS & PREVENTION

Overview
A dropped object can come from a tool left at height, a fixing that has worked loose, or equipment knocked during a lift. This four-hour course helps anyone who works in, visits, supervises or plans work where objects can fall to recognise the hazards, understand how dropped objects occur and what they can do, and apply prevention and control in their own work.
The course uses published industry guidance as a reference. It teaches what each type of securing does, so that learners can apply their own site's terms correctly, and it treats exclusion zones, their names, colours and distances, as site rules rather than universal values.
It is a theory course. Learners do not install tethers or securing, climb, work at height or carry out surveys.
Who it is for
Operators, technicians, maintenance personnel, drilling personnel and rig crews, supervisors, HSE personnel, scaffold personnel, lifting teams, contractors, logistics personnel, inspectors and planners, on offshore installations, drilling rigs, production facilities, process plants, construction sites, fabrication yards, workshops, terminals and marine facilities.
What the course covers
- 1.Dropped-object fundamentals: definitions, potential dropped objects, static and dynamic dropped objects.
- 2.Consequences and risk: mass, height, impact and deflection, consequence areas, and the purpose and limits of consequence calculators.
- 3.Causes and contributing factors: technical, environmental, human and organisational.
- 4.Identifying hazards across activities, equipment and locations, and the methods used to find them.
- 5.Prevention and control using the hierarchy of controls: securing, tools at height, zones and work controls.
- 6.Work planning and execution: Red Zones and restricted areas, line of fire, and controls before, during and after a task.
- 7.Inspection, housekeeping and personal responsibility, including area ownership and awareness of independent surveys.
- 8.Response, reporting and learning when a dropped-object hazard or event is found.
How the course runs
Instructor-led, with images, hazard-recognition activities, a case study and a closing hazard hunt. The instructor may show securing hardware or tethering products; learners do not install, test or inspect them.
The course ends with a 20-question interactive knowledge review. There is no pass mark and no score. The instructor uses the review to find and close any gaps in understanding before the course finishes. You complete the course by attending the full four hours, taking part in the review, and having your understanding of the safety principles confirmed by the instructor. If anything remains unclear, the instructor arranges further review. This is not a fail.

What this course does not qualify you to do
Awareness level only. This certificate does not qualify the holder to perform dropped-object surveys, inspect lifting equipment or safety-critical bolting, install or certify securing or tethering systems, or carry out work at height or lifting operations.
These activities need further training, competence, procedures and company authorisation.
